The Nigerian Governors have come up with a budget of N525bn to combat kidnapping and other security concerns, which have been on the increase in recent years. According to the analysis, these data for the funds were calculated from the year 2023 to 2025. The budget was tracked by budgit.org. The website claims to provide transparency of the government budget.
This budget is intended to train more forces and buy more equipment for the security of the Nigerian citizens. Not having a secure nation puts everything at risk, making people vulnerable, affecting their well-being, and the economic state.
Even though it is the duty of the federal government to protect its citizens from harm, the Nigerian governors aren’t counting on that. They believe they have to play a role as they can’t stand idly by and watch their states be infiltrated by criminals. The rise in crime has forced them to set up their own strategies to help reduce the violence.
With the budget on the rise and efforts being made, it still feels like nothing is being done. Crime is still on the rise, and people are worried.
The funding data disclosed by budgit.org shows that Niger, Yobe, Gombe, and Kebbi did not disclose their allocation for security. The total money calculated was based on 32 states.
Ekiti was also an outstanding state. It failed to clearly disclose its total funding for security. This affected the total number of N525bn, indicating that the funds calculated should be much higher.
In 2023, the data shows that the state governors approved N150.47bn for security funding, and the following year, 2024, had a higher budget of N164.07bn. The budget also increased in 2025 to N210.68bn.
